Citation Honors Native American Youth Language Learners

About the State of Oklahoma Citation

On April 9, 2012, the State of Oklahoma gave a Citation honoring the students, teachers, and elders who are continuing to learn and speak their Native languages, noting those who participate in the Oklahoma Native American Youth Language Fair. The citation was sponsored by Representative Chuck Hoskin (D- District 6) and American Indian Caucus of the Oklahoma House of Representatives.

Representative Hoskin spoke first. Christine Armer, Cherokee language Instructor at OU and 2012 Fair Coordinator, thanked the House in her language. Then we heard the court clerk read the Citation in the Oklahoma House of Representatives honoring the hard work and dedication of Native language learners and teachers.

The Oklahoma Native American Youth Language Fair would like to thank all elders, teachers, students, their families, and our judges and volunteers who came to the Oklahoma State Capitol on Monday afternoon, April 9, 2012. We filled the gallery with language and color!

After the reading, students presented their Fair performances (spoken language, song, poetry) on the 4th floor of the rotunda for the public. It was a little noisy, but passersby stopped to listen and legislators came out to listen.
